In 2014, Tree Pittsburgh worked with residents and local stakeholders to create the first neighborhood-level urban forest master plan, ReLeaf Manchester & Chateau. Tree Pittsburgh staff again worked with the Manchester & Chateau community to provide an update to the plan, How Are We Doing, in 2022.

Manchester and Chateau

Elevated surface temperature, lower tree canopy cover, and the potential to increase engagement are all concerns when looking at Manchester and Chateau. Chateau has the lowest tree canopy cover in the city at 5%, compared to Pittsburgh’s city-wide tree canopy cover of 42%. Manchester has a current tree canopy cover of 17%. In 2010, a Landsat satellite thermal image showed Manchester had the hottest surface temperature of any neighborhood in the city. Pittsburgh’s average temperature is 96.6°F, while Manchester is 102.4°F and Chateau’s surface temperature 101.4°F.
