ReLeaf Lawrenceville
A Plan for a Healthier and Greener Neighborhood
In 2014, Tree Pittsburgh worked with residents and local stakeholders to create the first neighborhood-level urban forest master plan, ReLeaf Lawrenceville. Tree Pittsburgh staff again worked with the Lawrenceville community to provide an update to the plan, How Are We Doing, in 2022.

Why Lawrenceville
Lawrenceville (comprised of Upper, Central, and Lower Lawrenceville) is considered to be a low tree canopy neighborhood, with a combined existing tree canopy cover of 23%. Pittsburgh’s city-wide tree canopy average is 42%. Lawrenceville also has diverse land use types from an industrial riverfront to a bustling commercial corridor and dense residential hillside. Lawrenceville suffers from elevated surface temperatures and compromised air quality.
ReLeaf Lawrenceville is a plan and program to educate residents and business owners about the benefits of trees and increase the overall tree canopy cover. The plan is comprised of different programs to target many landowners including residential homeowners, industrial property owners, commercial property owners, cemeteries, and community spaces. This provides an opportunity for a more localized approach to connect land users to the urban forest.

About ReLeaf
Tree Pittsburgh believes that everyone has a right to enjoy trees and the physical, mental, and social benefits they provide. Pittsburgh has an overall tree canopy of 42%, but this cover is not equally distributed. The ReLeaf Program is a necessary step to rectify these discrepancies and ensure all residents experience the benefits of a thriving urban forest. We concentrate our efforts on neighborhoods with insufficient tree canopy — which leads to heightened summer temperatures exacerbated by heat island challenges, compromised air quality, and localized flooding or stormwater runoff issues.
In collaboration with residents, local organizations, municipalities, and other government entities, the ReLeaf program produces a neighborhood-level mini-urban forest plan tailored to each community’s unique situation.
