ReLeaf Greater Hazelwood
A Plan for a Healthier and Greener Neighborhood
Thanks to the support of the Pittsburgh Foundation, the Hazelwood Initiative and Tree Pittsburgh embarked on an effort to increase public awareness and public engagement in protecting and growing tree canopy in Greater Hazelwood. Residents identified the creation of a neighborhood ReLeaf plan as part of the 2019 Greater Hazelwood Community Plan, and the plan was completed in 2022.

Why Greater Hazelwood
Based on Tree Pittsburgh’s 2010–2015 tree canopy change data, Hazelwood lost 34 acres of tree canopy, making it the 4th highest loss of all City neighborhoods. The neighborhood’s tree canopy cover dropped from 32% canopy in 2010 to 29% canopy in 2015, well below the 2015 citywide average of 41%. Glen Hazel had the second-lowest amount of loss in the City, only losing 1.6 acres of tree canopy. Its overall cover changed from 66.4% to 60% between 2010 and 2015, making it the 4th highest canopied neighborhood.

About ReLeaf
Tree Pittsburgh believes that everyone has a right to enjoy trees and the physical, mental, and social benefits they provide. Pittsburgh has an overall tree canopy of 42%, but this cover is not equally distributed. The ReLeaf Program is a necessary step to rectify these discrepancies and ensure all residents experience the benefits of a thriving urban forest. We concentrate our efforts on neighborhoods with insufficient tree canopy — which leads to heightened summer temperatures exacerbated by heat island challenges, compromised air quality, and localized flooding or stormwater runoff issues.
In collaboration with residents, local organizations, municipalities, and other government entities, the ReLeaf program produces a neighborhood-level mini-urban forest plan tailored to each community’s unique situation.
