ReLeaf Beltzhoover

A Plan for a Healthier and Greener Neighborhood

The ReLeaf Beltzhoover plan aims to improve residents’ quality of life by providing a roadmap with a priority list of projects to increase the neighborhood’s tree canopy and resident participation in tree care and educational activities. The plan calls for various action items to restore and protect Beltzhoover’s community trees, with youth engagement as a fundamental anchoring point for consideration during future project implementation in the neighborhood. It also presents a roadmap for increasing tree canopy coverage.

Work on the ReLeaf Beltzhoover Plan began in November 2022, thanks to residents and key stakeholders including the Beulah Baptist Church’s Health Ministry, FroGang Foundation, and the broader Beltzhoover community. Our engagement involved door-to-door outreach, participation in community events like Beltzhoover Community Day, tree adoption events, educational sessions, and neighborhood tree planting initiatives.

Why Beltzhoover

Beltzhoover has only one street tree per every 16 residents, lower than the Pittsburgh average of one tree per every 9 residents. While Beltzhoover’s tree canopy coverage rose from 49.06% in 2015 to 50.35% in 2020, a large portion of the canopy is concentrated in the 79 acres of McKinely Park. Trees provide numerous benefits to the community, but having the canopy coverage in a concentrated area restricts some of those benefits, such as stormwater management, from benefiting all residents in the neighborhood. Areas of Beltzhoover with the lowest tree canopy are also experiencing more extreme temperature-related challenges on hot summer days, particularly in the northeast corner of the neighborhood located the farthest from McKinley Park.

About ReLeaf

Tree Pittsburgh believes that everyone has a right to enjoy trees and the physical, mental, and social benefits they provide. Pittsburgh has an overall tree canopy of 42%, but this cover is not equally distributed. The ReLeaf Program is a necessary step to rectify these discrepancies and ensure all residents experience the benefits of a thriving urban forest. We concentrate our efforts on neighborhoods with insufficient tree canopy — which leads to heightened summer temperatures exacerbated by heat island challenges, compromised air quality, and localized flooding or stormwater runoff issues.
