One Tree Per Child
Ensuring every child plants a tree
One Tree Per Child Pittsburgh engages students in tree planting, tree care, and environmental education.
Students can immediately see the power they have to create change on their school grounds or nearby parks and are inspired to get more involved in their communities. As one student said, “trees need humans and humans need trees… we are a perfect team!”
The support for trees doesn’t stop with a planting day. Students receive environmental and tree-planting education before plantings, and Tree Pittsburgh works with administrators, teachers, and facilities to ensure the continued health of trees planted on school grounds and nearby green spaces.
Why plant trees in schools?
Trees have been shown to provide multiple benefits for students, including improved behavior and test scores. Trees also provide shade for playground areas and classrooms and improve air quality around school grounds. Areas with trees are also a built in open-air classroom with plenty of opportunities for outdoor education.
One Tree Per Child believes that by engaging students in the planting of trees they take ownership of their work. This helps students to better understand their role in caring for the tree and helping it take root and grow, instilling a sense of responsibility.

Tree Pittsburgh is proud to adopt One Tree Per Child Pittsburgh to add capacity and ensure that every child can plant at least one tree during their time in school. One Tree Per Child began in Australia through the efforts of Olivia Newton-John and Jon Dee in 2015. Since then, it has expanded to 11 countries worldwide. One Tree Per Child Pittsburgh, started by Dr. Isabela Angelelli in 2017, was the first OTPC partner in the United States.
