We love working with youth! Whether the programs are in schools, at your library or community center, or at our 5‑acre campus on the Allegheny River, we have something for everyone. We believe that educating the next generation of urban foresters is a vital part of our mission to grow and protect the urban forest.

In addition to the programs listed below, we are pleased to partner with the City of Pittsburgh Park Rangers to implement the Explorers Guide and Program.

Schools and Teachers

Our Education team is available for special classroom programs and visits. No matter the age of your students, we can adapt our programming to suit your needs. If you don’t have green space nearby, no problem! Our indoor programming is just as engaging.

We can also provide your classroom with one of our Urban Forestry Toolkits, which are stocked with activities for your students to explore some self-directed learning.

If you’re interested in planting trees with your students, check out our One Tree Per Child Pittsburgh program.

Library Programs

We love traveling to libraries! Our education staff is available for in-person visits, book recommendations, and more.

To inquire about our library programs, email Maeve Rafferty at maeve(at)treepittsburgh.org.

Community Groups

Youth groups, Scouts, and other community groups are perfect candidates for our youth education programs! Similar to our school programming, we can offer in-person instruction where your group meets, or we can welcome you onto our campus in upper Lawrenceville to learn about our learning landscape, Heritage Nursery, and reforestation efforts along the Allegheny River.

We are available for providing instruction for badges as well as general education.

Special Events

Throughout the year, we organize special events for families and children of all ages. The programming changes every year, but past events have included a reading with Chicka Chicka Boom Boom author John Archambault, Trick or Trees, and acorn collecting at Flagstaff Hill.

Looking for some summertime education? Check out our STEAM Outside Camp @ Tree Pittsburgh. For one week, youth in grades 4–6 visit our campus and learn about the urban forest and natural environment through a STEAM lens.
