Mature Tree Care for Storm Resilience Workshop

Trees with good structure are less prone to failure during storms. Mature trees must be intentionally pruned with storms in mind. Managing a tree for its structure and weaknesses allows trees to survive storms and live further into maturity. In this course, we will discuss branch attachment, branch length, and co-dominant stems. We will describe site characteristics and multiple factors that contribute to pruning decisions, per tree. Preventive pruning, also known as structural pruning, is a process that can help to promote storm-resilient attributes in trees.

This workshop will feature Archie Autenreith, the owner of Northwood Tree Care, LLC. Northwood is a local tree care company focused on proper management of trees in order to maximize the benefits trees provide to their communities. He is a Board Certified Master Arborist, competes in tree climbing competitions, and is enthusiastic about his family and community. As a lifelong learner, Arch continues to educate himself on the best techniques for managing risk, reducing liability, and increasing value of trees in the urban and suburban landscapes.

Arch has presented to Sustainable Landcare credential holders with Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens, the Fox Chapel Area Adult Education program, and at the Penn-Del ISA Shade Tree Symposium.
