Please say a warm welcome to our new Coro Fellow, Maria Rose!

Maria Rose is an aspiring environmental journalist, currently working with Tree Pittsburgh through the Coro Fellowship for Leadership and Public Affairs. Through the spring, Maria will support the education initiatives that Tree Pittsburgh is conducting, particularly through helping to design an urban forestry summer camp as well as analyzing news and academic articles on the benefits of trees. Two of her main projects will include developing a sustainability plan for Tree Pittsburgh’s new campus, and reporting on tree canopy data and its disproportionate scarcity in communities of color. Prior to coming to Pittsburgh, Maria spent two and a half years in Chiang Mai, Thailand, working for a small Thai nonprofit and developing programs on child rights and migrant rights. As a writer, Maria intends to pursue issues of internal displacement, statelessness, and climate migration, as well as environmental racism and justice issues, especially as they impact health and social well being.

Maria earned a B.A. in environmental science from Vassar College, and was inspired as an eighth grader, while watching An Inconvenient Truth, to study the intersection of social justice and environmental degradation. Her goal is to use data journalism and narrative storytelling to open people’s minds to environmental issues. She believes that journalism that is as compassionate and emotionally correct as it is informed and structured may be the key for connecting with communities who may not prioritize environmental issues. With Tree Pittsburgh, Maria is excited to learn how environmental nonprofits are uniquely positioned in Pittsburgh to influence city planning and urban design, and to practice researching and writing about environmental justice issues at a city-wide level. She is a junior board member with Venture Outdoors, and, if she’s not perusing bookstores, you can find her working and climbing at Ascend pretty much every day.
