Repair the World Service Corps with Tree Pittsburgh
Looking for a way to serve in your community and combat social injustices? Join Repair the World as a part-time, stipended service corps member placed at Tree Pittsburgh!
Please note: you must apply to this position through Repair the World at this link. Applications are accepted through February 16, 2023.
Repair the World’s service corps mobilizes adults ages 18–29 to invest both in their communities and themselves through the lens of Jewish values. Service corps members will spend 5–10 hours per week 1) volunteering with local service partners and 2) connecting Jewish approaches to justice with issue-area education surrounding the lasting economic and social effects with a local cohort. In 10 communities around the country, service corps cohorts will be supervised by Repair the World staff to integrate the themes of the program in a small group setting. Corps members are eligible for a stipend of up to $1,500 at the completion of the program, with additional funding available through the Economic Access Fund for corps members impacted by injustice.
As a Repair the World Corps Member placed with Tree Pittsburgh this spring 2023, you would spend upwards of 10 hours a week helping to make a tangible impact at an organization, its tree nursery, and out in communities.
You would spend about 70% of your time supporting the Tree Adoption Program Manager to facilitate Tree Adoption Events. Another 20% of your time would be spent supporting the Nursery Operations Manager in the Heritage Nursery on tasks that may expand beyond the role of the Tree Adoption Program. Some examples of these tasks include:
- Work as a team with Nursery and Tree Adoption staff members to pull, prune, label/tag, station, and water trees to prepare them for the Tree Adoption Events.
- Assist the Tree Adoption Program Manager in setting up for, staffing, and cleaning up after Tree Adoption Events.
- Assist the Nursery Operations Manager in removing winterization materials in the nursery, transplanting trees, seedling pruning, seed propagation, and infrastructure projects (drainage trenches, irrigation, air pruning beds, or pest security fencing).
The final 10% of your time will be spent contributing to an end-of-placement special project that you will propose, which will blend your existing knowledge and expertise with the needs of the organization.
Tree Adoption Events can either be during the weekday, weekday evening, and/or almost every Saturday morning or early afternoon between late March through mid-May. Nursery tasks would be conducted anytime between 9 a.m.-4 p.m., Monday through Friday. It is encouraged that the applicant has access to a reliable personal vehicle, as Tree Adoption Events occur across Allegheny County.
